Christmas ideas

*A helmet should be worn while using these bikes*
I first saw a balance bike a few months ago at a garage sale.  It wasn't for sale, but was being used by a 3 yr old to ride around.  It looked so cool, yet so easy.  The boy was having a blast and had a lot of control while using it.  So, this year we're looking to buy one for each kiddo for Christmas.  There are no used ones to be had on Craigslist or eBay right now, but I will be watching both closely.

Another option would be for my hubby to modify the current toddler two-wheeler we have to make it a balance bike and buying a second one at thrift store and doing the same.

Have you heard of these bikes?  Do you own one?  If so, what do you like/dislike about it?

  3. My 3.5 year old son has had his for about 2 years. We got him a 'Hot Walk' by Specialized, and it has been a great bike for him. My husband races duathlons, and one of his bikes is the same brand, so we were familiar with the product quality. They didn't cheap out on the kids bikes -- they are well made, and light weight enough that my son can get off & lift his over curbs and such. http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=32773

You may be better able to find them used on the classifieds for local bike groups, either duathlon, triathlon or just recreational riding clubs. Cyclists tend to have them in greater numbers for their own kids, and also tend to sell things on their 'own' forums first :) Good luck, I hope you can find them -- they are a great bike!

  4. Thanks so much for the advice Rochelle :) Tonight we disassembled her bike and it works great, although it's about 2" too big. So, this week I'll be hitting up the thrift stores to look for a smaller toddler bike to disassemble. :)
